Tongue cancer is a form of oral cancer, which can affect the mouth and oropharynx. Tongue cancer is divided into that on the anterior tongue and that at the base of the tongue. Tongue cancer is often grouped with other mouth cancers, such as cancer of the lips, hard palate, cheek lining, floor of the mouth (portion of the mouth underneath the front of the tongue), or gums. These cancers are collectively known as oral cavity cancer. There are two parts to your tongue, the oral tongue and the base of the tongue. Cancer can develop in either part. . Cancers that develop in the front two thirds of the tongue come under a group of cancers called mouth (oral) cancer. The most common type of tongue cancer is squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA). Squamous cells are the flat, skin-like cells that cover the lining of the mouth, nose, larynx, thyroid and throat. Tongue cancer is most typically seen in tobacco product users. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol and people who wear dentures are also at risk for developing tongue cancer.
Generally, the first sign of tongue cancer is a pinkish-red sore at the side of the tongue that persists and seems not to heal over time. A white or red thick patch on the tongue, gums, or lining of the mouth may be a key tongue cancer symptom. Other tongue cancer symptoms are difficulty or pain in chewing or swallowing, and a sore throat that does not go away. Other rare tongue cancer symptoms, or mouth cancer symptoms, include pain in the ear, change in the voice, and unusual bleeding, pain, or numbness in the mouth. Typically tongue cancer symptoms will not appear in people under the age of forty-five years old, but some younger people do experience tongue cancer symptoms. These tongue cancer symptoms may also be caused by another unrelated health problem. It is important to see your doctor if you have tongue cancer symptoms so he can run some tests.
